And now, here's the crew at Red Sox Digest.
[00:00:31] Speaker B: Good evening, sports fans, and welcome to another edition of Red Sox Digest, where the bullpen's duct tape is starting to fray and Alex Bregman's bat may need to be registered as a lethal weapon. I'm your host, Jim Delfino, back again like a bad umpire call. And joining me tonight is Nick Face, the man who can diagram a bullpen meltdown on a cocktail napkin and convince a scout to trade prospects for ketchup packets. Currently running conspiracy theories about Jordan Hick.
Point thair Doyle, ladies and gentlemen, is now officially broadcasting from a boat in Alaska. Not a scouting boat, not a team sanction, anything. Just there, a parka, and what appears to be a deep obsession with glacier velocity. He claims he's watching a pitcher throw frozen peas off the deck for spin rate comparisons. We haven't verified the footage, but it does involve a seal. Clapping Nick diamond is in Florida, which means our data department is officially operating on sunshine and statistical chaos and questionable air conditioning. He swamped as usual. Bunker for a poolside setup, whiteboard balance on a flamingo floaty laptop shaded by a palm tree, and yes, still wearing a headset like he's calling game seven. Your Boston Red Sox walked out of Target Field tonight with an 8 to 5 win that felt like a group therapy session for Red Sox fans. Now 58 and 51 on the season, the Sox are in a real dog fight with Seattle and New York for wild card order. After a weekend of bullpen roulette and weather delay, delays that made us question our life choices, tonight's game was, dare I say, competent. The third inning was the highlight reel. Roman Anthony slapped a single to score. Rafaella Bregman doubled in another run with a little help from some errors. And Trevor Story launched a two run bomb that had Minnesota fans checking the warranty on their optimism. Jaren Duran added a solo shot in the fifth because apparently center field is his personal canvas now. Rafaela chipped in with a sac fly in the sixth and the ninth inning was pure insurance. Story doubled in Bregman and William Abreu followed with a double of his own to plate Story. The Twins tried to rally with not one but two Brooks Lee homers, even though Ocala tried to give them the game.
85 in the 9th wasn't good enough and 8 to 3 was not good enough to avoid Aroldis Chapman.
Red Sox have 10 hits, eight runs and only two errors, so that's progress. So tonight we celebrate a win that didn't require a rain delay, a miracle by the bullpen. Nick Face, I know you've got thoughts on Trevor Story's hole in his glove and whether Roman Anthony should be classified as a controlled substance. Let's get into it. Nick, your reactions for tonight's game.
[00:03:15] Speaker C: I just want to make sure that our awesome buddy Thayer is safe from this tsunami that's about to hit, in all seriousness, to open up. So let's make sure that that is, that is okay. But if the tsunami does want to hit for Jersey street to get something going here with the Red Sox, with the trade deadline, I'd appreciate some sort of life because they're, they're lifeless right now, Jim. I'm still waiting and waiting for figuring out what the heck's gonna go on, what's the next move, what are we doing here?
But we're in stealth mode. Stealth city, baby. It's coming.
No, it's not.
No, it's not.
Just be surprised. Just be surprised because I'm just gonna sit here and tell you, don't expect anything. Don't expect it because if you are leading into the trade deadline on Thursday with them trying to do something drastic to change this team, you are going to be so badly disappointed.
So offer offering my advice, go at this with nothing and be surprised.
Changing gears to tonight.
First of all, I fell asleep last night. I did. I went to bed all happy as a clam. I go, roman, Anthony, you're my guy. You're my guy. You did it. Four, three. This was a game that was a throwaway that we expected them not to do anything with and to lose. We expected this fit start to be a loss. That's what we said on Sunday.
Well, it was a loss, but it shouldn't have been a loss. So they lost. They resumed Play. Was it 1:00' clock in the morning here or 12:00' clock in the morning? Something like that. I had to be up early. Tuesdays are my day. I have to get somewhat of sleep. So I woke up and I was so pissed off, Jim. I was pissed. I threw my phone to start my day and I already knew I was doomed when I hit that. I'm like, you Got to be kidding me.
Well, Jordan Hicks. Jordan Hicks was your guy last night because that was the last guy you had. You had turbulent issues with Garrett Whitlock. You had Aroldis Chapman with explosive things going on. You had pretty much nothing.
And that really set me off, because in my eyes, as much as you had nothing, Alex Cora set that team up to fail last night with how he managed that game, Fitz needed to take it for the team, 100%. I don't care if he was great. I was not a happy person watching him start. But you know what? He should have been out there for the fifth, the sixth, extend him.
Extend him. And then Chris Murphy only throwing an inning. What the hell is wrong with Cora?
That should have been much longer than that. Then he threw Bernardino and then Jim, our good buddy Alcala. Don't you love him? Isn't he a gem?
[00:06:04] Speaker B: You know, last night, really Joke.
[00:06:07] Speaker C: It just tipped me off and it pissed.
[00:06:09] Speaker B: Yeah. You know, and I looked at that and I said, all right, let me watch the highlights. I watched the highlights and I see Jordan Hicks hitting everybody in the foot. I'm like, you know this guy? And of course, I mentioned it on Twitter. When Alex Kora said, you know, about the bullpen, and I said, you should have chose someone else. Everybody was like, well, there was no one else left, you know, and again, the point. Point is, yeah, okay, no one else was left because Whitlock was, you know, obviously not feeling well and Chapman wasn't feeling well. But to your point, we talked about that earlier in the. In the day, that Dick Fitz needed to take one for the team, and he needed. No matter how bad of an outing he had, he had to go into the sixth at least, because we needed to make sure that we had enough pitching. And, you know, luckily enough that didn't go into extras. God willing to see what that would have been like if that had gone into extra innings, if who would have pitched? I mean, they would have had Hicks for two or three or four innings because don't forget, he was a starter for a while. But that would have been a total train wreck. So at some point, they would have wound up losing that game, even if he got through the ninth inning. But that doesn't change a lot of what's been going on. You mentioned Ocala, you know, since he. Since he got here. He hasn't been that bad up until his last few outings, which tells me that, you know, other teams are finding scouting reports on him, and he's definitely turning into a guy that we cannot depend on. And it gets me a little bit worried, and I don't know how they're going to be able to fix this, because I'm still wondering, like, is Justin Slayton alive?
[00:07:41] Speaker C: I mean, do we play catch today?
[00:07:43] Speaker B: Oh, he did play catch today. Okay.
[00:07:45] Speaker C: He played catch today. That's a. That's a big movement right there.
[00:07:49] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:07:49] Speaker C: Whether that means he's going to do anything, who knows? But he played catch because we still.
[00:07:54] Speaker B: Don'T have much information on his injury. We don't have much information on Marcel Mayor's injury, which I find really astounding on both fronts.
[00:08:02] Speaker C: I do want to hear you on that.
[00:08:05] Speaker B: Yeah, I. Go ahead. Tell me. Tell me about that.
[00:08:08] Speaker C: They're not saying anything that's going on, and they're going to wait till the trade deadlines over before any announcements made. They don't want to scare teams away.
[00:08:16] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. You know, it's probably. You're probably absolutely right. The one thing I have a problem with with Mayor, while his defense is really good, he's been hurt every single level of every year since he's been signed by the Red Sox as a minor leaguer. You know, of course, last year about this time was the big talk about, you know, Christian Campbell and Roman Anthony being brought up to aaa and Mayer was on the shelf, and they wound up bringing him up every. Anyway because they needed to keep the three Musketeers together, and they didn't want anybody crying or boohooing, so they wound up, you know, bringing him up regardless.
So it remains to be seen, but it kind of goes back to where I want to go with David Hamilton. So I want to open this up with David Hamilton. Nick, I saw his name in the lineup. I don't understand the fascination that Alex Cora has with David Hamilton getting regular at bats. I said this earlier in the season, and I've said it on this broadcast before, and I've said it in my tweets on Twitter. David Hamilton is the perfect number 26 man, because he's a guy that should come in to steal bags. If you want to call him the David Roberts of 2025, go ahead and do so. But my point is, is that he should not have a bat in his hand if you can avoid it unless you're in extra innings. He needs to be the guy that comes in, steals second, puts havoc on the bases, can score from second or first on a. On a. On a, you know, ball in the gap or at least, you know, steal second and third, and then maybe Come in on a sack fly that was perfectly executed yesterday where you saw him steal second, steal third and be in prime position to score the go ahead run. And that's what I want his usage to be. So with that being said, I'm not a fan of Raphael playing second base, but let's face it, I mean, Hamilton gives you nothing offensively. Look at what he did tonight. It was another 0 for 0 for 4 performance. Nick, you're Jim.
[00:10:12] Speaker C: The only reason that he played tonight is because he was rewarded from Korra from stealing two bases and the fact that Masataka Yoshida sucks.
That's why he played. So he also wants to try and pick his. Pick his battle here with what's he, what he's going to do with Rafaela. I was listening to a little bit of the pregame when he was talking on the radio with Will Fleming and Mike Monaco and he was saying that he really ideally wants to keep Rafaela in center field. But the problem comes down to roster management. So you have to kind of work with what you got tonight. The reason Hamilton started again, it's because he gave them great speed on the bases last night. Cora feels like he's going to be here, bro. Here, buddy, buddy. We're going to put you out there because you earned your keeps and because again, Yoshida's terrible.
If Yoshida had done anything last night, he'd be in the lineup again today. But he didn't.
He's a dink and dunk hitter and it is what it is. It's a waste of a roster spot. I know we don't want to get into Yoshida because we covered him ad nauseam on Sunday, but that's the real reason why.
And in all fairness, I know you just mentioned the three musketeers with Campbell, Meyer and Anthony. Well, Christian Campbell is hitting the COVID off the ball right now in Worcester. He had another launch ball tonight in Worcester. Out to deep center field and over 400ft. Christian Campbell has definitely found his swing again.
So in my eyes, I look at those adjustments that have been made and this isn't a small sample size. Now we're going on about a little bit over two weeks now with Campbell making the adjustments and now us seeing even the power approach, changing the dynamic of who he is and why he got to the big leagues in the first place.
I would say by Friday, August 1st, I want Christian Campbell back on this major league team.
You can't do any worse. You can't. You can't do anything worse. I mean, Our lineup coming into tonight, I know Story had a big homer and some of the other guys, most of the guys are either hitting a buck 20 to a buck 80 combined of Rafaella, Story, Abreu, Yoshida, the list goes on and on.
So you need a spark.
If that's your spark with Campbell, I'm fine with that. Give him another chance.
[00:12:32] Speaker B: Well, Nick, here's the other thing. If I told you right now that we had a minor league infielder that was in Triple A, currently hitting.281, 12 home runs, 46 RBIs and an.809 OPS. An.809 OPS? Wouldn't you want to promote that person?
[00:12:51] Speaker C: I sure would.
And he had quite some things to say about it today, which I was in complete agreement with. I don't know if you saw the quote, but he's like, I don't know what else I got to do.
I've done everything I can. And we're talking about Grissom. He should be up here. There's no excuse why he's not getting time over a Yoshida or some of these other guys.
Clearly, something happened behind closed doors. It has to be the reason.
Maybe he mouthed off to the wrong person.
Maybe he did something with Cora. But he's being punished in Worcester. Let's. Let's be real. He is being punished down in Worcester.
[00:13:32] Speaker B: It makes little sense to do that, though. So I don't know why, but, I mean, I don't. I rule out nothing. But the fact of the matter is, is that you traded for this guy for Chris Sale, who wound up winning a Cy Young, and he's having a really good minor league season right now. And you're getting. Your major league team has trouble scoring runs, and times they have trouble putting hits together, and they're getting really nothing out of DH and nothing out of second base.
So you've got two guys. You mentioned Campbell, who seems to find his swing again, and you've got Grissom. Two guys that are contributing to some level of positive, you know, offense, and they're not utilizing them. And I think that's really a disservice at this point.
[00:14:20] Speaker C: I did hear some rumors, and I don't love when I can't confirm this, but I did hear some. Some chatter that some of this actually has to do with Pete Fatsy. I think something happened with Grissom and Fatsy. I think that's the reason that they're not bringing him back up. So that's why. I mean, I'm trying to be honest When I come across and say he's being punished, he really is sick.
[00:14:45] Speaker B: Nick, I'm going to switch gears a little bit on you.
I want to talk a little bit about Lucas Giolito and his kind of bounce back outing today. Last two, as you know, have not been very, very good. They were against obviously stronger competition when he was facing teams after the All Star break. This is his first start of a team that is more mediocre. Final line on Giolito. Six innings, five hits, five strikeouts, one earned run, two walks, 101 strike pitches, 61 for strikes. Nick, take me through the outing. Were you satisfied?
[00:15:24] Speaker C: Absolutely. Absolutely was satisfied. That is what I want Lucas Giolito to be because that set the world on fire. But if he can be a 2, 3 guy, that's exactly what we were hoping for him to do. The biggest thing here is he went to six innings. I personally would have extended him to the seventh just knowing how the bullpen's been.
But the Red Sox are now going to try and be cute here and manage Giolito's innings because of this whole triggered option with his contract. So if he's under a threshold of what's it, 140 innings, it's a 15 million dollar option that's triggered in or 14. I think it's 14 million.
If he goes over that 140, then it's a mutual option where they both have to agree at a 19.1 million contract for next year. So this is. They're going to be the Red Sox trying to finagle a guy here over $5 million.
That's how cheap we are.
It's disgusting.
[00:16:28] Speaker B: I think his good start tonight comes at a perfect storm opportunity for the Boston Red Sox because they can now go back to us fans and say, well looky, looky here. We don't need to go out and get a number two starter because Lucas Chiulito has found his way and he can be our number two starter again.
Which leads me to my next topic of two things that I saw today that made me want to vomit, like roll this, Chapman. And that was that good old friend Rich Hill was DFA tonight Nick, by the Kansas City Royals. So, you know, you can certainly be very, very happy to know that he is available and can be signed at a moment's notice.
And it's also reported too, and we talked about this before and we kind of had it in our chat.
The Sox have also checked in on 4,900-year-old Charlie Morton, who would obviously need to be required to get a trade from the Baltimore Orioles who probably would give him up for almost nothing. Nick, take me through what you think of either one of those options. And are the Red Sox a serious team if either one of them is brought here?
[00:17:50] Speaker C: I have to tell you, when this came out, I tweeted it right away. And I have to tell you, my Twitter and X fans did not pick up on my sense of humor on my tweet that I put out there. Shame on all of you because I said, leave it to the Red Sox to replace a dick Fitz with a dick mountain and nobody decided to laugh. Nobody commented. Nobody did anything. You sickos out there, why can't you at least give me one? Like, Like, Come on.
[00:18:20] Speaker B: That was great. I loved it. I loved it.
[00:18:23] Speaker C: Leave it to the Red Sox because it's so Red Sox typical to do something so stupid like that.
[00:18:31] Speaker B: You know, again, I would not be surprised if either one of them is brought here. But my point is, you know, I don't know how serious you can really take the Red Sox to go out and do something like that. What is either one of them going to do for you? I mean, if. If the Kansas city royals are DFA. Rich Dale, if you DFA'd him last time he was here, what would you actually expect him to contribute to this major league roster? And the same thing with Charlie Morton. I mean, he had a good career, but let's be realistic. This is just. Just an exercise in saying that anyone else who was a rental was way too high in their asking price. Price. And they can get either one of these guys for next to nothing. And for Rich Hill, nothing at all.
[00:19:18] Speaker C: So here's. Here's exactly the playbook on how this would be scripted if this does happen.
Well, fans were screaming for some veteran type to come in. Here you go, fans. Rich Hill's been there, done that storied career. He's bet he'll. He'll be that guy, that veteran type that this pitching staff so desperately needs.
Same story will go for Charlie Morton. Look at his postseason success.
Look at everything he's done over his storied career. We need somebody who has that mentality to join our staff. I'm gonna be flat up honest with you. One of them will be here come Friday. One of them will. That's just how this rolls. And I'll have the last laugh if one of them isn't here. But I'm telling you right now, expect it.
[00:20:07] Speaker B: Again, like I said, I rule out nothing with this team at this point because they're it's, it's so red sake of them to do something like that.
[00:20:16] Speaker C: It's a bargain.
[00:20:17] Speaker B: Yeah, that's what they're looking for. But you know, I got to be honest with you, I if that if either one of them is brought in here, I am going to rip them apart because it's proof to me.
[00:20:28] Speaker C: Should be.
[00:20:29] Speaker B: It's, it's proof to me. And it should be proof to any Red Sox fan that they maybe John.
[00:20:35] Speaker C: Henry's invested into that now. I could just hear the jingle right now. Craig Bresla. Don't you just love Rich Hill and Charlie Morton?
[00:20:43] Speaker B: Well, speaking about other reclamation projects, I brought this up today when I saw it, and people said he's not a reclamation project. But the Red Sox have also apparently checked in on Shane Justin Bieber, and I have a problem with that too. Not because Bieber isn't someone who can still be effective, but you can't try to compete for a playoff spot in 2025 by bringing Shane Bieber in here. I don't even think he's going to pitch in a major league team this year. I mean, I could be wrong. He might get some work in September, but can you honestly bring him in here with the thoughts of playing in in October without even having him, you know, get eight or nine quality starts before the postseason? Nick, your thoughts on Shane Bieber. Am I wrong here?
[00:21:32] Speaker C: You're not wrong. Shane Bieber, 4 or 5, was up the top of my list. For a guy that I thought could come in here and be a stabilizer in this Red Sox rotation, that was 20, 18, 19, right around that time frame, then he got hurt and then it's kind of been a trajectory downhill for him. Historically, most times when Tommy John surgery is done, it usually means that you're going to get some more velos on the arm and usually make a nice full recovery and find the fountain of youth. It screams Red Sox all over this with this kind of move. The question here on it is how ready is he going to be if this is going to be another month or two down the line until Shane Bieber is ready? You can't, you can't tell your fan base here, oh, we went out and we got somebody who we feel is going to really help us in the postseason. You just can't.
I do like the fact that he's kind of been that one of those guys that's been around the block and knows how to pitch that I can take. But I, I just look at this right now. If they did this. Right now, in the back of my mind, all I could think about is here comes Corey Kluber. He's coming right home.
[00:22:44] Speaker B: Yeah. You know, again, you know, this is just actual more proof that when you start seeing these 24 hour from the deadline tweets coming out left and right about guys like Charlie Morton and so forth. It just goes to prove to you that the Red Sox are already trying to position themselves for letting the fans get their typical yearly letdown. There is absolutely no way that I see that they're going to go out and make an impact move at this deadline. I mean, there's talk even on the offensive side of the ball about Yandy Diaz. And Nick, you brought him up, I think about a week ago.
Again, great guy. I would definitely love to have him in our lineup and playing first base and getting some DH time, but I just don't see it happening. Even if the Rays do decide that they're going to go belly up and give up on this season, I just don't see the Red Sox doing what it's going to take to improve this team with any one of substance. And, and I'm talking about guys like him, Merrill Kelly, Mitch Keller. I read a report that they were, that they checked in on Mitch Keller. You know, we've got the interest kings all over again.
[00:24:01] Speaker C: Nick, what's all everybody, they're interested in everybody in everybody. They're interested from age, who knows when to all the way to Rich Hill grandfather stage. It doesn't matter with them. They're interested in every single thing that's out there. And nine times out of 10, nothing happens from it. They just want to tell other people, oh, we did our homework, we're doing our due diligence, we're looking at this person. I just think it's ridiculous. And the Yanni Diaz move, I just have to say I just don't see the Rays dealing him to the Red Sox. I really don't.
I'd love that to happen because that would give us finally another right handed thumper to put in that lineup beside Bregman, which would be great.
But let's be realistic. It's just there's not a pipe dream that could happen right now for me to tell you right now that I have confidence come Friday, Yanni Diaz will be your first basement for the Red Sox. No way.
[00:25:01] Speaker B: John Morosi reports that the San Diego Padres are interested obviously in a left fielder. There's been a lot of talk about Jaren Duran and they said that they would trade A prominent pitcher. So whether it's a guy like Dylan Cease and also Robert Suarez's name has been mentioned in these reports as well. If the Red Sox Nick went out and traded Jaren Durant and one other piece for Dylan Cease and Robert Suarez, what are your thoughts on that, and do you think that that would be enough to propel this team into a playoff run?
[00:25:35] Speaker C: I would say probably, what, 10 days ago, prior to when Marcel Meyer went down, the Red Sox would be tempted. I think they were waiting it out a little bit for the deadline and then, sure. Breslow said, well, maybe we'll get closer to the deadline and we'll see what's going on from this point. And I had said right then I was very frustrated with Durant. I think it was over the weekend with the Dodgers series or whatnot. And I said I would make the move with Dylan Cease with some sort of an extension agreed upon our catching prospect that the Padres had, I think it was their number two ranked and somebody else for Durant, I said yes, 100%.
The Times have changed because now there is that whole not really a log gym in the outfield. I think the only outfield that you and I would probably entertain and snap our fingers with to get the heck out of here right now is Yoshida.
Just how it is. I still would definitely entertain Duran. I really would.
And if you come away with something better than what Durant is, I would totally entertain it. I don't want to slam the door on it because we're another streak away from him, from me wanting to chuck things out my window here at my house with Duran. He's had a nice couple games right now, don't get me wrong. But he's beating up in the bad competition. How long is this gonna last? That's the question here. And especially now with him trying to settle into the number three spot. I just think it's a ticking time bomb right now, Jim. With it, with him, you're on a good streak, but how sustainable is this?
[00:27:07] Speaker B: I've talked about that.
I've talked about that before. I'm not really too sold on Jaren Durant being outside of the leadoff spot, and I just don't understand what the actual thought process is from Cora on that. You know, there's talk about the fact that he's driving the ball a little bit more. But, you know, look, if you compare last year to this year, he had a better ops, he had better slugging last year, so he's actually regressed. And you mentioned this on Sunday.
And my problem with that is is that if a regressing leadoff hitter is no longer good enough to lead off, how is he good enough to be your number three hitter? It just doesn't make any sense to me.
[00:27:52] Speaker C: Welcome to the 2025 Red Sox because you got two consistent bats and got Anthony and Bregman.
[00:27:58] Speaker B: Yeah. And welcome to the fact that Alex Cora just likes to play merry go round with his rotation. It's ding dong school and his lineup. A name I want to bring up too, especially with that San Diego thought is the password right?
So in Worcester, he's currently batting.291 with a.364 on base percentage and OPS almost.900. He's got 11 home runs and 31 RBIs. Based on what you see for the Boston Red Sox outfield and the fact that we have a log jam from Yoshida as DH right now, it really doesn't appear that he has. I'm talking about the password now. Garcia doesn't have a path to make this major league team.
Would the the Padres entertain if they Red Sox don't want to move Duran? Would they entertain a PAT package including him to get a guy like Cerez and Dylan cease?
[00:28:55] Speaker C: The thing that I look at with password that I really like, I like how he's right handed. I really do. And I think a lot I look at the lineup for the Red Sox. You got Roman Anthony, who's lefty. Duran's left handed. I know you got Toro, who's, who's, you know, he's your first baseman. He's, he's switch hitter. David Hamilton is right hand. You're very right handed. Heavy. The way I look at it. Yoshida, of course, if I look at one of the outfielders that actually has maybe somewhat of a trade value, I think I gotta highlight Willie or Brayu really do if I'm gonna really be serious here about what I want to do and what the Red Sox would probably want to do. I don't think they want to trade Duran. I think they're listening and figuring that out.
But Abreu is the player that I look at that has the Gold Glove that's attractable for another team and he has the power. At least I look at him as expendable.
I just feel that that in me and I personally would rather give right field to a password upcoming and try and figure it out that way because I just look at Abreu as a guy that has the long swing and I really don't Think he he's going to make adjustments with his swing.
Not adjustments like we're seeing with Roman Anthony. No way. Roman Anthony where he's going the other way and figuring out how to get these big hits.
You pretty much know right now what you're going to get with Willie Abreu and that is swinging out of his ass trying to launch that ball, doing exactly what Pete Fatsy wants him to do. So I would entertain looking at teams that might be interested in Abreu. I would see what's out there and I would do it. If the Padres are interested, do the deal.
[00:30:41] Speaker B: Yeah. You know the other thing about him and Duran and this outfield log jam that we have, I think you're right 100% that you could still get a pretty good haul for a Willie or a Breu. And the other thing that I think too is if you traded him, the dynamics of the team. In other words, if you traded a Breu and you got a pitcher or a first baseman or something that was a non outfielder and you brought up someone like the password. I don't think you would miss much moving a bray. You I think you might miss more if you move Duran. Not that I'm a Duran fan 100% and I think he's expendable. But Duran still is a little bit more dynamic with his speed. You don't get much speed with a bray. I mean he's had a couple sneaky stolen bases here and there, but I think you wouldn't skip that much of a beat if you moved to Bray you and slid the password in there. The other thing that I'm surprised about is is that would the Red Sox ever consider moving the password to first base and see what he could do there? I mean my biggest thing is is we really don't know a lot about his ability yet. He hasn't had obviously a major league at bat. They haven't made any inclination that they want to bring him up. I kind of want to know what I got there without making too much tinkering, but I'm a little concerned.
[00:32:10] Speaker C: Your thoughts if they if they tried out Yoshida over at first base. Why the heck can't password go and play first base either? That's how I'm looking at it. That's supposed to be your test out stage, figuring out if you can play how versatile the Red Sox favorite word in the dictionary on a player if he can play first and outfield. Isn't that a dream scenario for the Red Sox? Looks seems that way to me.
And then that way that could answer some of your first base issues. Because I am not confident in the Toro Romeo Gonzalez platoon that's going on right now. It's not sustainable and it's makes me very concerned.
[00:32:50] Speaker B: No, I mean, Toro looked okay today, but again, to your point, we have to be worried that he's not going to be able to be sustainable. Before I go into some closing things, there was another message here, another tweet that talked about the Marlins and there was a announcement that the Red Sox said to the Marlins when they're going to, which all seems like a foregone conclusion. Trade Sandy Alcantara that the Red Sox want to know and they want to be checked in on before a move is made that, you know, either him or Edward Cabrera would probably be a good option. I know Alcantara had a tough early part of the season. He seems to have figured it out, you know, again, after so long after having Tommy John. Sometimes these guys, it takes a little bit, but he does have some control for a couple seasons.
You know, if you're interested in trading, it seems like a guy like the password would be a good trade partner for a team like the Marlins who could always use a young controllable termed outfielder type that could have hit some, some home runs and get some power. How about a trade involving Alcantara for the password? What are your thoughts on that?
[00:34:05] Speaker C: I would look at that.
I wouldn't have an issue with doing that because at least I know I can get something into my rotation that doesn't make me have to stomach another Richard Fitz start.
So I think that, that, that could be something I would be entertaining with. It'd be a little bit of a pain. That's kind of what a trade does to get something of quality, to get another and lose something of quality. But I think the more we've seen how this rotation has its flaws big time, especially Bueller and Fitz, who are on the back end of the rotation.
You gotta get something else in there that can be consistent, that can give you quality starts that you can count on.
I'd give it some thought on that one.
[00:34:54] Speaker B: So again, I think the Red Sox have to answer the following question. What is their outfield situation moving forward? And I'm not talking just for 20, 25, I'm talking for 26 and 27 and maybe even slightly beyond that.
Because if that outfield situation is going to be Duran, Rafaela and Abreu, who all have term for the next three seasons, minimally, Duran is three years. I Believe Rafael is five, and I think Abreu is five at this point. Regardless of those numbers that I just pointed out, guys like, you know the password do not have an opportunity to be in this, in this outfield. And you notice I didn't even mention Roman Anthony, so the.
[00:35:40] Speaker C: I did notice that. So untouchable.
[00:35:42] Speaker B: Right? So. And he's not going to be a full time DH at 21 years of age.
So they have an ungodly amount of outfield depth and that's a good thing. But they're going to have to be able to be okay with moving one or two pieces out of that. And I can tell you right now, Roman Anthony and Sadane Rafaela are two that are untouchable in my mind. So I don't see them moving either one of them, no matter what the package could be. So it's got to be something involving a Duran and Abreu or a, you know, Johnston Garcia, one of those three or two of those three need to move. So if you want to go out and get a Sani Alcantara, it's got two years, a Mitch Keller, I'm all for that because frankly, without putting them at first base, they're never going to make the major leagues. A guy like Garcia, so. And you can't just have him rot there in Triple A putting up ungodly numbers without, you know, getting a shot at the major league level. So with that being said, just going to round this up with tomorrow. Brian Baio starting tomorrow. And I don't know, is there an opponent listed yet? Nick? I don't see it on ESPN site. Do you have any insight on anybody who the Twins are throwing out there?
[00:36:56] Speaker C: Believe it was a TBA bullpen game. I don't see anything else out there at the current moment.
[00:37:02] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:37:02] Speaker C: It is, it is, it is. Bay. Oh, tomorrow.
[00:37:05] Speaker B: So it's a getaway.
[00:37:06] Speaker C: I was thinking it, I was thinking it was crochet. But you. That's right, it is Bayo tomorrow.
[00:37:11] Speaker B: It's a getaway day. Obviously, Bayo and the daytime games don't typically jive too well.
I think the last time he had an afternoon game was the suspended game. Right. And I forgot, I forgot who the opponent was back then. But there was a suspended the game and he had like five innings, I think gave up a couple runs, but w up getting the win and it was a pretty decent outing and he obviously, you know, ate up some innings there. So take me to tomorrow's game. What do you think? Do the Red Sox win this one?
[00:37:41] Speaker C: Yes, they are going to win this game tomorrow. B is going to come in and throw six, seven innings. I would love seven. That would be wonderful. Two runs or less. I'm going to call it on that. I think what you saw tonight with this offense is it.
It's a jump start in a way. They plug the battery back in and I'm hoping that this continues and translates into tomorrow. I don't think there's going to be any moves overnight. I'd love one. If you keep looking at me. I keep checking my phone to see if anything's going on. Yeah, I am too radio silence. I'm anxious. I'm trying to figure out what's going on from everything I think that they're going to take. Obviously after tomorrow, it's going to be a long period of time until they play again on Friday.
So we have the trade deadline Thursday. Again. That's not till I think we said it was 6 o' clock that they changed it to.
So that's going to make it a long day on Thursday for all of us trying to figure out what the heck is going on. And we'll get a chance to talk about it after.
After the deadline is there. But I'm looking for Baio to have a quality start tomorrow and get the Red Sox back home to Fenway for Friday. And again we will be facing the Astros. So that'll be a big series upcoming this weekend, too.
[00:38:57] Speaker B: Yeah, we're going to be back live on Thursday with the trade deadline special and we'll obviously preview the Houston Astros series for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So we'll get into that on Thursday. But barring anything, you know, crazy that occurs tomorrow, we're not scheduled to be live. But if something absolutely breathtaking happens, maybe we will do an emergency show. Otherwise, we'll be with you on Thursday to kind of go over whatever does happen, you know, Thursday. And of course it seems like probably the best day for the Red Sox to do that since they are traveling. They don't have a game and of course they don't have to worry about pulling anybody from the major league team off a game or sending them on a plane to whatever city that might be. So kind of works out well for them on Thursday.
I doubt we'll see anything tomorrow, but if we do, maybe we'll hop on.
I'd like to thank Nick. I'm going to close it tonight for being on with me.

[00:40:28] Speaker C: Have a good night.
